Indiana Driving & Vehicles Laws (2026)

Indiana law does not prohibit or restrict driving barefoot. There are no statutes in the Indiana Code addressing footwear requirements for drivers.

Indiana Code §9-21-8-59 prohibits motorcycles from lane splitting or lane sharing. Motorcycles must remain within a single lane except when overtaking and passing another vehicle.

License plate covers are restricted in Indiana. No significant legislative changes since 2023, but there is a continued emphasis on ensuring that plates are not obstructed.

Radar Detectors are legal in Indiana. Indiana Code does not prohibit radar detectors in passenger vehicles but restricts their use in commercial vehicles.

Studded Snow Tires are legal in Indiana. The law was updated to explicitly include retractable tire studs, which can be on the vehicle year-round as long as they are retracted outside the permitted season.

Indiana law requires front side windows to have at least 50% VLT, rear side and back windows may be tinted darker. Windshield tinting is only allowed above the AS-1 line. These rules are in Indiana Code § 9-19-16-3.
